WHITEWASH INTERVIEW 2005

First off, what has the band been up to lately? You have not played any shows in a while.

Well here of late we have been doing lots of writing and recording. Also this year we recruited a new guitarist (JR Creep). Our previous player, BloodintheFace, had to move out of state due to work. So luckily we had someone capable of filling the spot. This year I have been really pleased with all the material we have been writing. We have returned to the insulting lyric writing approach. All the new music is pure Oi mixed with Hard Rock. I feel all the new material has a really catchy groove to it. We have really focused on trying to write memorable songs. The kind of stuff that will be stuck in your head hours after listening to the CD.

Well hopefully stuck in your head in a good way, not “I can’t get that shitty song out of my head”. Currently our line-up is WW Singer-vocals, Tapeworm-bass, JR Creep-guitar and T-Bone-Drums. As for shows, we have not played any because we have not rehearsed any of our old material. Since we have only been playing new stuff, I see no point in playing a show with material that people are unfamiliar with. Once we get some of this new material out we do want to start hitting the show circuit again.

What is the status on a Straightlaced Nightmare full length?

Yes we have been working hard on that project for the past few months. Although the project is going under the name of SLN, it is nothing like the previous material. This new material is extremely brutal and fast hardcore. I personally think this will be one of the best recordings we have ever released. SLN is a side project but we have put a lot of effort into it. Honestly this is the record I have wanted to do for years. I like Oi and RAC, but I feel this kind of music really gets my blood flowing. Just in rehearsal, I feel extremely pumped up about these songs. When playing them I could literally beat someone severely.

The record will be called “The Comfort You Give Is My Torment”, which will be released by North X. Musically this record is influenced by bands such as Negative Approach, Verbal Abuse, Heresy, Doom, Extreme Noise Terror, Slapshot, Negative FX, Side by Side, Terrorizer, One Life Crew, Capitalist Casualties, Bad Brains (haha), Teen Idles (DC), Discharge, Pitboss 2000, Uniform Choice, Sheer Terror, SSD, Government Issue, SFA, Sick of it All, Ten Yard Fight, Chain of Strength, Jud Jud……

What are your thoughts on the music download and CD burning craze that is currently going on?

I am not a fan of it at all! It is one thing to download music to hear new bands, but some people take it too far by stealing hundreds of albums off the Internet. People these days do not even buy CDs anymore. Everyone has this attitude of “why should I buy it when I can steal it off the Internet”. These people need to realize that they are stealing, and in the end the record companies and bands get fucked. Of course I am only speaking about WP music. The other shit I could care less about. However I do not have a problem with people burning WP music if they are in a country where it is hard to come by.

On the other hand, I think it is pathetic that people in America steal music when it is easy to order CDs at a reasonable price. Overall, WP music is not hard to get a hold of. We should support the bands, the labels and the distros. I do not say this because I want more money or anything like that. It is just that people need to buy the albums in order for the bands and labels to continue putting out music. From my personal point of view, I hate burnt CDs. I would much rather have the original.

In your last release, Texas Oi-Core Massacre, you went back to your Oi/Rac roots. What made you decide to do that?

Yes I suppose we did. I think we returned to the original WW style. In “Weapon of Choice”, we tried to experiment a little, try something new. Lots of the songs were really punk rock influenced. I think we were going through our Screeching Weasel stage. Really I think it had some great songs on it. It is just the production really sucked. The engineer did not put any effort into the recording. The drums really sound like shit. The snare makes some strange sound and the cymbals are non-existent. Can you believe he did not even mic the cymbals. We were in such a hurry to get it complete that I did not even notice it.

Also lots of the back-up vocals sound like shit. It is the producer’s job to catch that and to make sure it is done over and over until it sounds right. I guess we were spoiled because the studio we recorded our first two releases was really professional. They did not want a crappy recording coming out of their studio. Anyway, to make a long story short we learned our lesson in going to a crappy studio.

As for the WW recording on the split with Operation Racewar, I am really happy with it. I think the songs are really great, and they really showcase the WW style. The production may not be as polished as the “Unity Through Aggression” recording but I think it turned out great. It is a good recording with some rough edges, which I think really suits our songs.

   Any plans for new recordings?

Actually we have been doing lots of recordings this year. We have done some stuff for various compilations. We recorded “I don’t like you” for an Ian Stuart tribute CD (which has already been released), we recorded a Ramones cover for a Ramones tribute album, recorded some songs for a Straightedge 7”, a song for a Russian compilation and I think something else. Next up we will be recording 2 tracks for a German comp.

We also have the material for the next full length written and recorded. We planned to release it on Panzerfaust, but as everyone knows that is a dead issue. So I am sure we will eventually find someone to put it out. I really feel it is some great material. I think the songs are really catchy and have a hard oi and rock feel to them. The vocals turned out really sick sounding. The best thing is that it was not recorded in that crappy studio that we recorded “Weapon of Choice” at. I am still kicking myself in the ass for that dreadful sounding album.

Recently Pure Hate Records released all the Bloodstained Boots demos on CD. There is nothing new on the CD; most of that material was recorded in the early 90s. BSB is a band that pre-dated WW. The recordings are raw, but I still like them. They have that rough feel to them.

As for material to be released soon, we have a CD called “Awfully Raw…8 Years Later”, which will be released by Pure Hate Records. It is celebrating our 8 years as being a band. It will include one brand new studio track, many unreleased recordings……studio left overs, unused songs, live, demo and rehearsals. I am looking forward to that release. We packed as much music as we could on the CD. The length is roughly 75 minutes! The CD booklet is also pretty cool. It will be filled with liner notes and many photos…including pics of the many line-up changes we have had.

What are some of your favorite WP bands at this time?

Favorite WP bands at the time. Well of course H8Machine, they have always been a favorite of mine. I really like Red White & Black, they have a killer sound. I really like American Standard, but heard they are no longer a band. Operation Racewar is really good. I have heard some practice tapes of their newer stuff and I was really impressed. It is pure, aggressive hardcore. I also really like Hammerhead, but I am not sure if they are still together. There is an Australian band called Southern Storm that I really like. It reminds me of classic Open Season. Plus their lyrics are really radical!!

Has the scene in your town picked up any?

No, not at all. There is really no one, besides the band, there are a few people here and there. Most people from here have either moved away or dropped out. All I ever do is go to hardcore and metal shows. That is about the only thing to do here.
